I recently read an interesting case study on the US National Library of Medicine website titled: Diagnosis and conservative management of degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis.
This article discussed everything from symptoms to grading scales and prognosis. The article also went into detail about certain physical rehabilitation measures.
As we discussed in a previous blog post (click here to read it), there are several different kinds of spondylolisthesis.
Degenerative is one of the many and it affects thousands each year.
If you have been diagnosed with degenerative spondylolisthesis, take a few minutes and scan this article. It offers some great information. Here are a few of the highlights I found interesting....
1. Only 10-15% of patients who seek treatment for degenerative spondylolisthesis end up getting surgery.
2. Non-operative treatment is the mainstay of treatment for low back pain and should be the initial course of action in most cases of spondylolisthesis.
3. There is no evidence that one non-steroidal agent is more effective for low back pain than another.
4. There are no studies that specifically evaluated brace treatments (wearing a brace) for degenerative spondylolisthesis.
5. One study found that individuals with chronic low back pain and a diagnosis of spondylolisthesis who performed a 10 week specific exercise treatment program statistically showed significant reduction in pain intensity that were maintainted at a 30 month follow up.
This is a great read and I highly recommend you take the time to read the study. You can do so by visiting the National Center for Biotechnology Information, US National Library of Medicine's website.
You can read the article HERE.
Enjoy!
